Three simple letters drive the strategic plan of the Blue Valley School District. Those letters are PLC or Professional Learning Communities. PLCs are teams of education experts working toward a common focus, to reach the mission and vision of the school through collaboration with a focus on results. PLCs provide the structure for all curriculum work completed in the Blue Valley School District. Ongoing collaboration takes place among grade level teachers, department teams, school to school teams and district teams. All work focuses on the following four questions:
- What do we want students to learn? (This is the taught curriculum.)
- How will we know they are learning? (This includes formative and summative assessment.)
- What are we going to do if they don't learn it? (This supports intervention.)
- What are we going to do if they already know it? (This supports differentiation.)
District foundational beliefs as it relates to curriculum are:
- Every child can learn.
- The most effective learning occurs when each child's educational needs are frequently assessed and action is taken based on that assessment.
- A rigorous and relevant curriculum is needed for effective learning for all students.
- Strong schools have a shared vision, clear goals and a commitment to collaborate for learning improvement.
- Continuous improvement demands that public schools regularly use data to guide change and improvement.
The Blue Valley curriculum is written with the Blue Valley School District Strategic Plan in mind. The following curriculum Web pages are designed to help parents and teachers identify what content will be taught in each subject area at specific grade levels or courses. However, this site presents only the framework of what needs to be taught. We, as a district, understand that curriculum is not just the words in a document but the actions that occur in the classroom.
