Introduction

The Blue Valley Schools Student Services Department provides special education programs and services to all students who have a current individual education program (IEP). The purpose of the Advisory Council is to provide a vehicle for communication regarding special education among representative parents, staff and district administration.

Composition of the Advisory Council

The Advisory Council consists of a parent representative from each of the district's schools, staff representatives from each of the major areas of special education services, building administration and key leaders of special education services from the District Office. The membership includes approximately 50 people.

Educational Programs for Parents

Another purpose of the council is to provide educational opportunities for parents. During November, January and March, the Advisory Council will sponsor meetings where parents can learn about topics pertinent to special education in the Blue Valley community. Any ideas for educational programs are welcome and should be directed to the building representative or to the InfoLine.

Meeting Schedule

The Advisory Council meets four times per year. These meetings take place on the fourth Thursday of August, October, February and April.

Agenda for Regular Business Meetings

The agenda for the meetings is developed by the chairperson of the council and district administration and includes items generated by the membership, and by parents and other staff members within the district. Anyone can contact a council member with suggestions for agenda items for the meetings. As a communication vehicle among the various consumers and providers of services, the regular meetings will focus on items which have district-wide implications and are programmatic in nature. The council does not discuss issues pertinent to an individual student. Those issues should be resolved through building administrators or IEP team meetings.
