A

Required Fees include:

  • Activity programming fee: This fee is collected at the middle school and high school levels.
  • Technology supply fees: This fee is collected at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.
  • Learning resource fees: This fee is collected at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

However, the final amount due for students enrolled in one or more of these courses will be finalized when official schedules become available in August. For more information about middle school exploratory course fees, please contact your child's school. Fees charged for high school electives are listed in registration packets. They are also available by contacting your child's school.
2)  Q What is the activity programming fee?
A

An Activity Programming Fee is charged for students in grade 6-12. For 2010-11 the fees will be charged per student as follows:

  • Grade 6: $20
  • Grade 7: $50
  • Grade 8: $80
  • Grade 9-12: $120

Please note that there will be a $250 maximum payable amount for families with multiple Blue Valley students.

3)  Q What does the Activity Programming Fee cover?
A

The fee helps support all sports, activities, clubs and other supplemental contract items that require extra duty supervision from qualified district staff. This fee allows students the continued opportunity to receive valuable experience these programs and activities offer. The activity programming fee covers only a portion of the costs for a student team activity and does not replace fees currently being charged for programs such as drill team, cheerleading, certain clubs or sports.

4)  Q What if my student doesn't participate in any activities?
A

This fee will be refunded, upon request, to any student who did not participate in any KSHSAA or non-KSHSAA activity, school club or any other non-required activity which was offered at the school.

5)  Q What is the learning resource fee?
A

For 2010-11, the learning resource fee will be charged at a rate of $100 per student.

6)  Q What does the learning resource fee cover?
A

These fees are primarily used to purchase materials and supplies that support educational initiatives in the classroom. Typical expenditures include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Textbooks
  • New curriculum adoptions (typically on a 6 year replacement cycle)
  • Workbooks
  • Supplemental Materials
  • Bulletin board supplies
  • Stickers
  • PE supplies (specialized clothing and towels)
  • Music Supplies (instruments or supplies used in vocal, band or orchestra)
  • Instructional software licenses
  • Headsets used in the classrooms for computer courses
  • Calculators used in the classrooms
  • Instructional supplies used in the classroom
7)  Q What is the technology supply fee?
A

The technology supply fee will be charged at a rate of $15 per student in grades K-12.

8)  Q What does the technology supply fee cover?
A

The technology supply fee is used for technology materials consumed during the school year. This money cannot be used to purchase computer hardware of any kind, but instead it is used for technology support materials that can include items such as:

  • Diskettes
  • Laser or ink jet printer cartridges
  • Paper
  • CD-RW discs
  • DVD discs
  • Zip Disks
  • Blank video tapes (any format)
  • Blank cassette audio tapes
  • Batteries
  • Projector Bulbs
9)  Q Why do parents pay fees to register students for school?
A

While the Blue Valley School District receives the majority of its funding from the state of Kansas, the law allows school districts to charge back for certain expenses. The activity programming fee, the technology supply fee, the learning resource fee, along with course-based and program-based fees are part of this.

In these difficult budget times, the district appreciates the generosity and understanding that parents have shown with regard to student fees.

10)  Q Why have the required fees gone up from last year?
A

The State of Kansas is dealing with a budgetary shortfall that has negatively impacted funding for K-12 public education. Because of this, the Board of Education approved a fee schedule for 2010-11 that allows the district to continue to deliver a high quality education on a balanced budget.

11)  Q My family income falls within the guidelines to qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Am I required to pay the activity programming fee, the learning resource fee, and the technology supply fee?
A

All required district fees will be waived for students who qualify for free or reduced price lunches.

12)  Q My family income does not fall within the federal guidelines for free or reduced price lunches, but I cannot pay the fees at the time of registration. What should I do?
A

Payment plans are available for families who do not fall within the federal guidelines for free and reduced price lunches but cannot pay the fees at the time of registration. Please note that these payments cannot be made online. Please contact the building bookkeeper at your child's school for more information.
