A New School Year; A New Beginning!

At Lakewood we have a strong and supportive school team, and you are a vital member of this team. We all share the same goals for every child in our school- to be successful and safe, and to develop as students who value and accept responsibility for their learning. To this end, I would ask that you:

· Join our PTO!

We need you for the Lakewood PTO! There are a lot of fun opportunities to get involved! For more information, please attend the next PTO meeting on Thursday, September 20th at 8:45am in the LKE cafeteria.

· Promote Safety in the car line before and after school!

We have many children being dropped off and picked up each day, and I want to emphasize safety and also patience in our car line.

· Contact our school nurse with any medical needs!

Please be sure all immunizations and physicals are current and all health forms have been returned to Nurse Janet. Does your child have Allergies? Please contact Nurse Janet right away, as well as with any other medical issues. She will assist you as needed.

· Look for School Messenger emails!

This is one of our primary communication tools. You will receive many important messages from the office, PTO and others through this Blue Valley email tool.

· Check our Website!

This is another important communication tool. We encourage all parents to visit our school website where you will find our school calendar, staff websites, and information that will inform and assist you with school activities.

· Check Staff Websites!

Our teachers utilize these websites to post important information about what is happening in your student’s classroom. I encourage you to check your teacher’s website regularly.

· If you have any questions for me, please contact me through our website, or call our office to make an appointment. I will always be willing to meet with you whenever you have questions or concerns.

Common Core State Standards

Over the past several years, education and business leaders across the country recognized a need for common educational standards across the states. The “Common Core State Standards Initiatives” came into being and new standards were developed with help from teachers, school administration, and business leaders.  Common Core will begin to be adapted in classrooms this year and will be fully implemented by 2014. We are confident these standards will build and improve what we are already doing.

Sign Up for BV Alerts, Blue Valley Emergency Notification System

It’s time to sign up or update your preference on Blue Valley’s emergency notification system BV Alerts. If you have already signed up to receive emergency text messages there is no need to sign up again. If you are a new subscriber or if you need to update information or preferences, such as your child’s school, visit www.bluevalleyk12.org/bvalerts.  Signing up or updating information is quick and simple. Simply follow the instructions to personalize the system to meet your needs.

Text message alerts will only be used to communicate emergency messages from the district and/or schools. It will not notify parents of school closings due to inclement weather or other non-urgent messages. It is also important to understand that Blue Valley Alerts does not replace current district emergency or school closing communication practices such as email and posting information on the district website. The alert system is merely an additional tool to send urgent information out to the community in a timely manner. If you have any questions regarding Blue Valley Alerts, please call 239-4043.

Community Bulletin Board

Instead of backpacks full of fliers, sign up to receive student opportunity notifications electronically via the Community Bulletin Board. After signing up, subscribers will receive notification via email when a new local opportunity is offered by an outside group. From basketball camps to BVRC activities and scouting, the Community Bulletin Board will keep parents informed about the latest opportunities available for kids. The electronic Community Bulletin Board is located on the district home page at www.bluevalleyk12.org. Click on the “Parents” button or the “Community” button to find it. People can also go directly to the page which is located at www.bluevalleyk12.org/community/bulletinboard. For questions about the Electronic Community Bulletin Board, contact Judy Trout at 239-4040

A Note from the Nurse…
