Please note that it is suggested you sign up for BV Alerts. BV Alerts will notify staff and families via text message FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SIGNED UP when emergency situations occur in a school AND/OR when school is cancelled due to inclement weather. If you have already signed up for BV Alerts text messages there is no need to sign up again. If you are a new subscriber or if you need to update information or preferences, visit www.bluevalleyk12.org/bvalerts.
BV Alerts is just one of the many ways to find out if inclement weather is impacting the school day. If the decision is made to cancel classes, the district will also notify the following media outlets by 6am: WDAF-TV (Ch 4), KCTV (Ch 5), KMBC-TV (Ch 9), KSHB-TV (Ch 41), as well as KCUR, KFKF, KBEQ, KMBZ and WDAF radio stations.
Blue Valley famlies will receive an email from the district in case of a weather-related school closing (if your email is updated in the ParentVue/Synergy system). In addition, the district's weather line (913-239-4600), website (www.bluevalleyk12.org), Facebook, and Twitter will have up-to-date information if the school day is impacted due to severe weather. If bad weather continues and classes are cancelled the following day, announcements will be made in the same manner as the day before. Otherwise, classes will be in session.
Each year Leawood Elementary selects a theme for the year. This year's theme is "Everyone Matters". Every person deserves to feel he/she is an important part of the community. Leawood Elementary hopes to foster an environment where we will show respect, kindness, empathy and compassion to each other. We want students to believe in themselves and respect other's choices. Every person at LES should be valued for who they are because "Everyone Matters"!

LES Students in STEM competitions!
Our 4th Graders:
Some of our 4th grade students in Miss Wilton's class entered and WON the Battle of the Brains competition! The contest is sponsored by Science City & Burns and McDonnell to help decide the next exhibit at Science City. The LES entry was GeneTech - an exhibit to help explain genetics, heredity, and genetic technolgy in an engaging and interactive format. Visitors to the propsed exhibit could see how different DNA structures create different traits/features, how altered genes may create health issues, how genetic technology can affect our food, and how to solve a crime using DNA. WOW! We are so proud of our students! Look for GeneTech coming to Science City!
Our 5th Graders:
Some of our 5th grade students have entered the First Lego League Comptition. First Lego League is a worldwide themed research and robotics competition. LES has 2 teams entered - the Titanium Monkeys and the Gear Geeks. There are 4 competitions from November through the finals at Union Station on January 18th. Students will find out if they are in the finals toward the end of December. There is a lot of practice, work, and effort put forth to prepare for these competitions. Great job LES students!
Special thanks to Exhibit Deal (www.exhibitdeal.com) for providing Miss Wilton's class with a table top display!
