Dear Parent,
Below you will find some helpful information as it relates to the MAP scores recently sent home for your student. These tests help us determine your child's instructional level and measure academic growth from year to year in reading and mathematics.
The report includes a cumulative record of your child's scores from last year (if applicable) as well as detailed information about scores this fall. The brief descriptions below provide a summary of the report. For more detailed information, see the additional information included.
RIT Score:
the student's overall score on the test. This score is unrelated to the age or grade of the student, but reflects the level at which the student is currently performing.
RIT
Range
:
No score is absolute. We would expect that if a student took the test again relatively soon, that his or her score would fall within this range most of the time.
Percentile
Range
:
Percentiles are used to compare one student's performance to that of a larger group (norm group). Percentile means the student scored as well as or better than that percent of students taking the test in his or her grade. There is about a 68% chance that a student's percentile ranking would fall within this range if the student tested again relatively soon.
District Average:
The average RIT score for all students in the Blue Valley School District in the same grade who were tested at the same time as this student.
Norm Group Average:
The average score observed for students in the norm group, a group of over three million students in over 100 districts located in 42 states.
Lexile:
A score related to reading difficulty of text.
This information can help in choosing appropriate reading materials based on a student's RIT score. For more information, go to

.
Goal Performance:
The columns to the right of the graph show the student's performance in the goal strands (subtests) tested in this subject. These scores provide a snapshot of the skills in each goal area at the student's instructional level.
Teachers will be using the information these scores provide to plan instruction and measure individual student growth. MAP testing is a powerful tool for monitoring student growth over time. We hope you find this information informative. If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher or myself. Thank you for taking an active interest in your child's education.
