Romare Bearden Community Collage
The thing that I love about being an art teacher is that I can integrate the student's classroom curriculum into my projects to further their learning, and that is just what we did in our Romare Bearden Community Collages. In their classrooms, the students have been studying URBAN, SUBURBAN, and RURAL communities. In art, we looked at examples of Romare Bearden's collages, mixed media pieces, and photo montages. We used magazine clippings, scrap paper, crayons, and markers to make our communities come to live. The second graders focused on overlapping shapes to create space. Look closely at the art work. Can you tell if the community is an URBAN, SUBURBAN, or a RURAL community?
