• Blue Valley Technology Guidelines for Students

    Student Email

    The Blue Valley School District has issued district student email accounts to students enrolled in the middle and high schools, at no cost to the student. Students will be expected to use this account for academic purposes only. Students can access this account from their homes or on a district computer in their home school.

    Students in Blue Valley are expected to respect and abide by the following email guidelines.

    • Messages should be kept simple and direct using correct grammar and spelling.

    • The use of appropriate language is expected. Swearing is unacceptable at all times.

    • Sarcasm and slang should be avoided and any criticism should be constructive in nature.

    • Derogatory comments including those regarding race, gender, religion, politics, sexual orientation, physical or mental status, or ability will not be tolerated.

    • Content of online discussions, and personal information learned through online discussions, must remain private.

    • Personal information such as student ID, social security number, address, or phone number should never be revealed in an email.

    Email messages must not be assumed to be confidential or private. Due to the fact that we cannot guarantee the privacy of electronic messages, email should not be used for confidential or sensitive communications.

    In order to ensure a safe educational environment for students and staff and to ensure that certain types of confidential data is not being sent through email messages originating in the district, technological systems may be used to monitor and report suspected violations, including, but not limited to the following:

    a. Messages that contain sexually-explicit language, graphics, or pictures;

    b. Messages that contain Social Security Numbers;

    c. Messages that contain Credit Card Numbers;

    d. Messages that contain references to the use and/or possession of illegal substances in the BVSD; and

    e. Messages that contain references to the possession or use of firearms, other weapons or actions that may result in a threat to the safety of students and staff.

    Students are expected to respect and abide by the Blue Valley Board of Education's policies on acceptable use.

    Personal, Mobile Electronic Devices

    The Blue Valley School District will allow students to bring their personal, mobile electronic devices to school and access the school district's wireless network according to the following expectations:

    * Students may bring their own devices and will be responsible for the care and technical support; the district does not provide technical support for personal devices.

    * Students will use any personal mobile devices only at appropriate times throughout the school day and adhere to all classroom expectations.

    * Students will respect the integrity of the wireless network they are allowed to access and agree to not alter it in any way.

    * Students will agree to disconnect from the wireless network any time they are asked, particularly during times of excessive use of the network with school-owned devices such as during assessments.

    * Students will access the wireless network using the bvstudent network with their user name and password and will not be permitted to use bvguest.

    * Students are not permitted to use their personal 3G/4G network on school property. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires that the district filter Internet access to students and block inappropriate content. Accessing a personal cellular network, in lieu of the District's network violates CIPA requirements. Students who access web-based materials, e-books, or assignments while utilizing their personai3G/4G network may incur charges on their cellular plan. Charges incurred by accessing a personal cellular data plan are the responsibility of the student.

    * Students will abide by all classroom and school rules governing use of the devices including powering down during inappropriate times such as testing.

    *Students will limit their use of the devices in classrooms to educational purposes only .

    * Students will respect privacy of other students and teachers when using personal, mobile devices and audio/video recording or imaging capabilities. No audio or video recordings/images will be captured or shared without direct permission from a teacher or administrator.

    * Students will use recording devices for lectures and other classroom presentations only with teacher permission and prior notice.

    * Students are expected to respect and abide by the Blue Valley Board of Education's policies on acceptable use of technology.

    * The Blue Valley School District is not responsible for the security of the personal, mobile electronic device including, but not limited to, virus protection and/or unauthorized release of information contained on the device. We recommend that any personally sensitive files (tax documents, social security information, bank records, etc.) be removed from the computer before it is used on campus.

    * The district is not responsible for any damage, loss, or theft of the personal, mobile electronic device.

    * Students are responsible for any accessories necessary for operation and usefulness of the device including cables, charged batteries, cases, and other peripheral devices.

    * Students are responsible for their own files and should back them up as needed. The Blue Valley School District is not responsible for replacing lost files or reimbursing for the time and money necessary to replace those files.

    Students are expected to respect and abide by the Blue Valley Board of Education's policies on acceptable use.

    Acceptable Use Policy

    Use of personat mobile electronic devices and email is governed by the Board of Education's acceptable use policies (3518- Students and 6420- Employees) and supporting guidelines. This is a reminder that you have no reasonable expectation of privacy in your use of this technology and that violation of these policies may result in disciplinary action. Each time you log into the wireless network, you are agreeing to these policies. Do not attempt to override the Internet filtering software or other network configurations. In the event that a student uses the wireless network on a personal, mobile electronic device in an inappropriate or unacceptable manner at any time OR uses a personal, mobile electronic device using an outside service provider in an inappropriate or unacceptable manner during the school day, in violation of Board policies, or in violation of these guidelines, the student will be subject to disciplinary action. Such action may include, but shall not be limited to, detention, loss of class credit, loss of technology or computer privileges, or suspension. In the event that a student uses a Blue Valley School District student email account in an inappropriate or unacceptable manner, in violation of Board policies, or in violation of these guidelines, the student will be subject to disciplinary action. Such action may include, but shall not be limited to, detention, loss of class credit, loss of computer privileges, or suspension.
