    Library

Every week, our class will check out books from the library. Students may check out 3 books at a time and are encouraged to bring back their books when they are finished with them. Students may request additional opportunities during the week to check out new books from the library.

I also suggest using the public library to stock up on great books to read!

    Reading Fluency

Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly.  When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words automatically.  They group words quickly to help them gain meaning from what they read.  Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression.  Good reading fluency provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.

It is important for students to hear fluent readers read aloud.  You can help by reading aloud to your child every day.  At school, students hear teachers and others model fluent reading.

Students must have practice reading aloud themselves to become fluent readers.  They should be reading materials at their own reading level.  Repeated reading of familiar materials helps develop fluency.  We all know that practice and repetition is the key to improvement of skills.

Second grade teachers work hard to help students improve reading fluency.  We will utilize various strategies including modeling fluent reading, choral reading , partner reading, and more.

    Reading Minutes

Students will keep track of how many minutes they read outside of school. Time can be counted for incentive from books, magazines, newspaper, comics, other books, etc... Students are responsible for recording their time and adding it up at the end of the week. Students are required to devote a minimum of 20 minutes a night (400 minutes per week) to reading activities. This is considered part of your child's homework.
