Early Childhood Special Education

Talk with your child about what to expect. Your confidence and enthusiasm will help create a positive experience. It’s natural to feel concerned about your child’s development, but if you approach the day positively, your child will simply see it as a time to play.

You will check in, and we will guide your child into the screening area. You will then be escorted to the family waiting area. Your calm and confident separation will help make this transition smooth.

The screening facilitator will engage your child in games and play activities while observing across developmental areas. A standardized screening tool is used for these observations. We also screen every child's vision and hearing.

Most screenings take less than an hour. Wi-Fi is available in the waiting area.

The screening facilitator will visit with you when your child is finished; there may be questions based on the result of our observation. The screening team then reviews all the information and uses a computerized tool to obtain screening results. The screening report, including whether we want to see your child for further evaluation, is sent by email within two weeks.

Depending upon the information you provide and what we observe on the screening day, our team will make a recommendation. These may include:

• No recommendations - skills appear within age-appropriate limits at this time,
• Further evaluation - with your permission, we would like to conduct a more formal evaluation in one or more developmental areas,
• More information needed - we would like to visit with you and observe your child in another setting, to determine the next steps.
