Blue Valley Superintendent Dr. Tonya Merrigan Announces Retirement at the End of the School Year
After more than 30 years of dedicated service to education, Dr. Tonya Merrigan, Superintendent of Blue Valley Schools, has announced her plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 school year. Dr. Merrigan, who became the district’s first female superintendent in 2020, has been a valued leader in Blue Valley since joining as a high school counselor in 1999.
“Serving the Blue Valley community has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” said Dr. Merrigan. “I am incredibly proud of all we have accomplished together, from expanding student opportunities to focusing on health and well-being and ensuring every student’s success. It has been a joy to work alongside such a talented and dedicated team of educators, staff and community members who are committed to making a difference in the lives of our students.”
During her tenure as superintendent, Dr. Merrigan has overseen significant advancements aligned with the district’s strategic plan, including a focus on student health and wellbeing, attracting and retaining exemplary educators and enhancing student success. Under her leadership, Blue Valley Schools has continued to be recognized as one of the top school districts in the nation, known for its academic excellence, innovative programs and strong community partnerships.
“Dr. Merrigan’s leadership and unwavering dedication to our students and staff have left a lasting impact on our district,” said Gina Knapp, President of the Blue Valley Board of Education. “Her focus on student success and support for educators has helped shape the future of Blue Valley. We are truly grateful for her years of service and the positive difference she has made. She will be missed, but her legacy will continue to guide us as we move forward.”
In the coming months, the Blue Valley Board of Education will begin the search for the district’s next superintendent. Community and staff members will have opportunities to provide input on the qualities they would like to see in the next leader. A timeline and plan moving forward will be shared in the coming weeks.
“We are committed to an inclusive and thoughtful process to select the next superintendent who will build on the strong foundation Dr. Merrigan has laid,” Knapp said. “We value the input of our entire Blue Valley community in this important decision.”
As Dr. Merrigan looks toward her retirement, she is focused on ensuring a smooth transition and supporting the district in continuing its mission of excellence.
“I am confident that Blue Valley’s best days are ahead,” said Merrigan. “It has been an incredible journey, and I am grateful for the relationships, experiences and memories that will stay with me forever.”
