Cougar Connection: August 31, 2020

Welcome Back Teachers and Staff
Wednesday, August 26 marked the first official day back for our incredible staff. We kicked off this school year discussing our theme of IMPACT and how we believe that during this unique year we, perhaps, have the greatest opportunity ever to positively impact the lives of the students we so deeply care for and miss. We also discussed how thankful we are for the many students and parents who have already impacted our lives as well. While there are far too many examples to share, please know the emails of encouragement many of you are sending to our staff, the families who are creating and donating masks for our staff, the students who participated in the IMPACT video, and the students and parents who graciously welcomed our staff with sidewalk chart art is so, so appreciated.

I would also like to thank the Lakewood Middle School PTO for providing a delicious boxed lunch from Panera for our staff. It was fitting that we started the school year in partnership with our wonderful PTO.

Together, as a community, we will thrive through this unique time and ensure our children continue to receive an exceptional learning experience all the while knowing they are loved, valued, and cared for.

6th Grade Orientation: Save the Date
6th Grade Orientation for all students (in-person learning and VirtualED) will be held virtually between 8:15 and 9:15 on Tuesday, September 8. During this time we will officially welcome our 6th grade students to LKMS! As part of our presentation, delivered via Zoom, we will discuss a variety of topics to ensure your child is prepared for the first day of school!

Device Pickup for 6th Grade Students
Tuesday, September 1 is the day our 6th grade students will receive their district-issued Chromebook. Please refer to the email sent on Friday, August 28 for specific details. Information regarding device pickup for our new 7th and new 8th grade students will be coming soon.

Student Schedules
Our wonderful school counselors, Mrs. Claire Allen and Mrs. Erin Olsen, are hard at work preparing student schedules now that the VirtualEd registration window has closed. In a typical school year, 6th grade schedules are distributed during 6th Grade Orientation (the day before school starts) and 7th and 8th grade students receive their schedules the first day of school.

This year, we will share information about how to view schedules through ParentVue and StudentVue. Students should be prepared for both synchronous (live instruction) and asynchronous (learning that is assigned and students work on it throughout the day/week) learning. We will also communicate what students should expect on the first day of school as we get closer to the first day.

School Supply Pickup Delayed
As you may remember last year our wonderful PTO offered LKMS parents with an optional opportunity to purchase a kit containing school supplies for your child’s core classes for this school year. Unfortunately we have learned that, due to issues out of their control, our vendor is delayed in providing the class kits. We hope to have updated information soon and will let you know once a delivery date has been set. We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.

Virtual School Tour
We are here to ensure all students, especially our new ones, have a positive transition to Lakewood Middle School. As much as we would love to give each and every one of you an in-person tour, given the unique circumstances, we felt it best to create a Virtual tour. Please watch the LKMS Virtual School Tour here:

2020-2021 LKMS Handbook Available
The 2020-2021 LKMS Handbook is now available online. The LKMS Handbook is designed to help our students, staff, and parents better understand our routines and procedures. If you are new to LKMS, we feel as though the handbook is a great resource. Lastly, please note that, especially during these unprecedented times, the handbook is subject to change.

Although activities and athletics are still on hold, we would encourage students interested in participating in sports to turn in their Middle School Athletic Packet prior to the start of school, September 9th. If we are able to continue with athletics, students will need to have the required paperwork completed and on file prior to participating in practices and competitions. A virtual parent information meeting is tentatively scheduled for September 8th. District updates regarding athletics will be provided here.

7th/8th grade Cross Country: Coach Bill Baker, 7th grade Social Studies teacher, will continue as our Cross Country Coach for the upcoming season.

From the Coach…I love coaching XC and am super hopeful for a season this year. Some modifications have been made for the season. Both 7th and 8th grade will only run 1 mile this year.  2 of the 3 meets will be run at LKMS this year.  I would encourage anyone who is thinking about going out for XC to go out and start jogging a little. Work on jogging a couple of miles and only walking for as long as you need to recover enough to jog again. Please drop me an email if you might be interested in Cross Country or if you have any questions.

8th Grade Volleyball: Coach Scott Anderson, 8th grade Math teacher, will continue as our LKMS volleyball coach for the upcoming season.

8th Grade Football: Coach John Haley, Physical Education teacher, will begin his first year as the LKMS Head Football Coach. Coach Haley comes to us with many years of coaching experience, most recently at Blue Valley West High School.

7th/8th Grade Cheerleading
Co-coaches Amy Alderman (FACs Teacher) and Mallory McKee (7th Grade ELA teacher) will begin their first year leading our Cheerleading Squad for this season. and

Fall Play: 6th, 7th and 8th grade
Ms. Knudsen, Speech and Drama teacher, will begin her first year at LKMS and will also direct our Fall Play. Welcome, Ms. Knudsen!
