Week of January 2nd

Dear Families,

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had a restful and fun winter break.  The Duggan's had a great break.  We spend the entire break at home which is fantastic.  Michael and I were able to play and adventure around.  He LOVED Christmas and really understands presents at this point! J I am looking forward to a great end of our year.  It is going to go super-fast so hold on!

·        Report Cards:   Report Cards will be available online on Friday.

·        Welcome Yuchan Lee to our classroom.  He is joining us from Korea!

·        Math:  We will review decimals today by playing some different games. Tomorrow we will pre-test Topic 7-Decimal Division.

·        Science:   We will start our Measurement unit today. This is a unit that is found in our math curriculum, but we use science time and the grades will go towards science as well.  The students will learn from each of the 5th grade teachers as we rotate for this unit.  They start with me and Customary measures, then Mr. Chace for volume and then Mrs. Cutler for Metric Measurement.

·        Writing:   We are going to use our research from last quarter to write an informational report.  We will start our rough draft tomorrow.  Before we start that we have a district assessment on informational text to complete.

·        Reading:   We will begin Theme 2-Discovering the Unknown-today. We will continue to incorporate social studies with our reading.  We will be learning about explorers and the founding of America this quarter.

·        Independent Reading :  Now that Battle of the Books is over we will continue reading a classroom novel as our independent reading. This selection is called Rescue Josh McGuire.  It is an adventure story about a young man who has taken a bear cub and is hiding in the mountains!  Students will be responsible for all the reading at home.  They will use Edmodo to blog on Tuesday's and Thursday's. The first blog will be tomorrow!

·        Chat and Chew: Students were given a bookmark today about Chat and Chew.  The directions to sign up are also on there.  Any questions contact [email protected].  This is a great opportunity and I highly recommend the kids participating.

  • Twitter:   If you have a Twitter account please follow us at @MrsDugganSPE.  I post almost daily the fun things we are up to in the classroom!

  • Grade Updates:   I know a lot of you have been on Parent Vue checking grades. That is great way to keep up with what we have been working on.  Please know that grades are updated each week by Tuesday at 10am.   If you check on Monday they won't be updated and there might be missing assignments that aren't really missing. Same thing for a Friday.  If you ever have questions about grades please let me know.
