Fire Science Program

  • Through a partnership with Overland Park Fire Department (OPFD) and Johnson County Community College (JCCC), students may enroll in Fire Science coursework for three hours a day over the course of four semesters. Courses will be held at OPFD facilities and will prepare students for certification exams required to be a firefighter. Initial coursework will also cover required information to jumpstart students interested in pursuing a career as an Emergency Medical Technician. Through this partnership, students will prepare to take the Fire Science Entrance Exam and may be eligible to receive college credit for some of the coursework completed. Courses will be held at OPFD facilities, transportation for students who need it may be arranged.

    This two year program will allow students to enroll in the following sequence of courses:

    Year 1 - 1st semester:

    Introduction to Public Safety

    Hazmat for First Responders*

    Year 1 - 2nd semester: 

    Emergency Medical First Aid and CPR

    Emergency Medical Science*

    Year 2 - 1st semester:

    Fire Science 1*

    Fire Science Workplace Experience*

    Year 2 - 2nd semester:

    Fire Science 2*

    Fire Science Workplace Experience*

     

    *Courses may be eligible for JCCC credit
